Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep
Nez Perce Valley
Bighorn males, called rams, are famous for their large, curled horns. Females, called ewes, have horns too, but theirs are shorter and less curved.
Each year a new growth ring is visible on the horns of bighorn sheep. The four-year ring is the most predominant dark and discolored ring and the rings get more visible after the fourth year. To age a bighorn sheep, look for the four-year ring and then count the rings toward the skull from there. Their belly also changes from straight and narrow to wider on the sides and round underneath.
